Common Questions

New Builds — FAQs

How Is the Cost of Wiring a New Build Worked Out?

New build wiring is priced on the size of the home, the number of circuits, lighting and power points, and any extras like heat pumps, EV charging or smart wiring. A small home costs far less to wire than a large one with multiple zones. We review your plans, walk through what you need, then give a fixed-price quote so you know the figure before work starts on site.

When Should I Bring an Electrician Into the Build?

As early as you can, ideally at the plan stage. Getting us involved before the slab and framing go in means we can advise on switchboard placement, cable runs and future-proofing rather than working around decisions already made. Early involvement avoids costly changes later and lets us coordinate cleanly with your builder around the Dunedin or Mosgiel site schedule.

Do You Work Directly With My Builder?

Yes. We work alongside builders, architects and homeowners on new builds across Otago, and we are recommended by some of Dunedin's best builders. We schedule the pre-wire during construction and the fit-off after plastering so the electrical stage slots neatly into the build without holding up other trades.

What Is Included in a New Build Electrical Fit-Out?

A full fit-out covers the switchboard, power distribution, lighting circuits, power points, data cabling and any smart home or heat pump pre-wiring you want. It runs from the pre-wire during construction through to connecting switches, sockets and fixtures, then testing and commissioning the whole system before handover.

Do I Get a Certificate of Compliance for a New Build?

Yes. As EWRB-licensed electricians we issue a Certificate of Compliance for all completed electrical work on your new build, confirming it meets AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and the Building Code. This documentation matters for your council sign-off, your insurer and your records.
